Rok Hwang was back in his London studio today for a Zoom preview, but it was five long months of working solo at home that shaped this resort collection, the first for his young brand. The collection’s prints are based on his own illustrations and tie-dye projects, while his mother’s personal scarf collection came in handy for experiments with cutting and draping. “Every cut you see I made by hand,” he said.
Many emerging brands sat this resort season out; canceled fall orders functioned as warning signs: do not proceed. But making clothes during lockdown gave Hwang not just a sense of purpose, but also a support network. He described a crocheted damsel dress created via a remote collaboration with a master knitter in Japan as a way for them to bolster each other up. “Everyone’s struggling, how do we win this situation together?” he asked.
As for the collection itself, Hwang doubled down on his signatures. Tailoring remains central to the offering, and he’s built in even more versatility. Jackets come apart in pieces—shrug on the sleeves or wear the vest solo—and can be fastened in multiple ways. Pants, meanwhile, are cut long with deep splits up the side seams. A dress in a pen and ink print of twisting ropes was designed with the same kind of off-kilter functionality, featuring adjustable sleeves and choose-your-own-length hems.
