We chat with Farzar EPs Roger Black and WacoOGuin, as well as with star lancereddick, about their creative partnership and what makes their newest netflix animated series so unique:
Netflix's latest animated series, Farzar, is brought to you behind the minds of comedy sensations Brickleberry and Paradise PD. Showrunners Roger Black and Waco O'Guin have decades of pop culture savvy and one-liners under their belts, and now they've added a dash of science fiction to sweeten the pot. Their newest adult animated series focuses on a far off land in the future, where humans have prevailed against aliens... only to learn maybe the aliens weren't so bad after all.
Waco O’Guin: We were huge fans of Masters of the Universe growing up, so that was the initial inspiration for something like this. And the show itself is different from Brickleberry and Paradise PD. We don't really do any pop culture stuff, which is good to separate the shows. Approaching it from the acting side, how different is Renzo from your usual characters, Lance?
Roger Black: It was kismet right then, you knew. And then the second time, we had done a show at the Georgia Theater. They had a sketch comedy group, and I went to that with another comedian friend. I'm like,"This is crazy, man. This guy is onto something." We just started working together, and we almost finish each other's sentences now.
And our composers are so great; they just got it when they saw the images. We were like,"We want this to be unique and sound different from Paradise PD," and they just added a little bit of 80s synth in there. We've been working with our same composers since 2011 and Brickeberry, and they're just incredible. They do the best work, and it adds so much to the show.
Lance Reddick: It's kind of like if Howard Stern and Mr. Rogers were twins, and they were 30-year-old women. That was really the first thing we thought of when we started talking about Farzar. It's this walled-off city where everything is riches and gold and beautiful, but then the aliens are living out here, you know, and humans have kind of taken everything from them - as humans do sometimes. It's not much of a spoiler that Fichael thinks his people are great. He has no idea what they've done, and he's been told these people out here are so evil and bad.
How aware are you of what's going to end up onscreen during a recording session? What is the process of putting an episode together like?
