Aaron Rodgers achieved a historic milestone, throwing his 500th career touchdown pass, despite a disappointing season with the New York Jets.
This is not how Aaron Rodgers expected his time with the Jets to go, once he finally got on the field for a full season. But Sunday, at a frigid, half-empty MetLife Stadium nearly a month after being eliminated from playoff contention, Rodgers provided a reminder of the remarkable legacy he couldn’t live up to in his new uniform. Rodgers finally made history on Sunday afternoon against the Dolphins, when he finally became the fifth player in NFL history to throw 500 career touchdown passes.
Rodgers had been sitting on 499 career touchdowns for more than two full games, failing to get the milestone, despite multiple red zone opportunities against the Rams two weeks ago and the Bills last week. But he finally joined one of the most exclusive clubs in NFL history in the second quarter against Miami, when he found tight end Tyler Conklin for a five yard touchdown pass to give the Jets a 7-6 lead. Rodgers scrambled forward in the pocket and looked poised to run the ball in, before he spotted Conklin who was wide open. Rodgers immediately pumped his fist after delivering the short pass and teammates mobbed him and Conklin in the end zone. Clearly, everyone knew about the milestone and it was a big moment for Rodgers and his tight end, to finally be a part of one of the most lofty milestones in the sport. Rodgers joins three of his contemporaries in the 500 club, Tom Brady (649 touchdowns), Drew Brees (571), and Peyton Manning (539), and the quarterback he replaced in Green Bay, Brett Favre (508). For it to come in a game that meant nothing to the Jets, in front of a home crowd that featured more empty seats and Dolphins fans than Jets fans, is surely not how Rodgers envisioned the moment heading into this season, when he had to know the milestone would be well within his reach. But it doesn’t take away from the accomplishment. And it’s not likely to be equaled anytime soo
