City championship tourney under way at League City Little League
Abel Niday of the Rockies cools off from a hotly-contested City Championship game Saturday. Niday and Co. return to the field on Tuesday for their meeting with the Yankees.Rockies fans were fully aware of Cooper Beard’s ability to contribute with the bat, but they hadn’t seen what he could do defensively, at least not when a game’s outcome was on the line.
The contests represented the second round of Majors Division competition that’s also pitting the Red Sox, Astros and Diamondbacks. The tournament continues Monday night with 5:45 and 7:45 p.m. loser’s bracket games. The first elimination contest was also played Saturday that sent the Diamondbacks against the Astros.
“I just thought about where I was going to go before that play and I knew he was a good hitter and I knew the part of the area where he was going to hit. So I got myself ready, got under it and caught it,” said Beard, who remembered to call for the ball to keep his teammate in left field away. Driving in the Rockies fourth run was Aaron Humble. With two outs, Humble put a ball in play that went for an infield single.
The Yankees scored two in the first inning on a Vennett Sommer triple and an error to make it 1-0, before Aiden Powell doubled and Jacob McGee singled him home. “All season, we’ve done really good on defense but our offense has killed us. If we keep our bats hot, we’ll be fine,” Powell said. They say the last out is the hardest and for the Triple A Yankees Saturday afternoon, was that ever the truth.
