The Rockies took a small step toward adding starting pitching depth Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Jeff Criswell from Oakland.
After playing three seasons at the University of Michigan, Criswell, 23, was Oakland’s second-round draft choice in 2020. He climbed the minor-league ladder last season, beginning the season at high-A Lansing, moving up to Double-A Midland and finishing the season by making two starts for Triple-A Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League.
Over three levels, he pitched 118 1/3 innings , posting a 4.03 ERA. The 6-foot-4 right-hander was ranked 16th in Oakland’s minor-league system by Baseball America. The Rockies now have 38 players on their 40-man roster. Criswell will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft at the end of next season if not added to the 40-man roster.
Smith, 27, made his Rockies debut last season after a strong showing at Triple-A Albuquerque where he posted a 3.09 ERA in 35 innings. But he struggled with control once he got called up to the majors, walking 17.6% of the batters he faced in his 15 outings .
