But right now, things are amiss. It’s mostly been a matter of poor pitch location, particularly with his fastball. He throws both a two-seamer and a four-seamer but has struggled to command both. Black would like to see Marquez cut loose. Marquez said it’s not been a mistake for him to try and evolve into a pitcher with a wide assortment of well-honed tools. However, this season, he might be trying to do too much, too soon. A shortened spring training because of the lockout took a chunk out of his learning curve.
