The RocketsForward Jabari Smith Jr. will switch to his preferred No. 10, changing from the No. 1 he wore in his rookie season to the number he wore at Auburn now that it is available following the in-season trade of veteran guard Eric Gordon.
Smith had sought to change his uniform number after Gordon was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in February, but the NBA does not permit number changes unless a player has changed teams. Smith’s change will be the Rockets’ second in as many years for one of their top draft picks. Guard Jalen Green switched from the No. 0 he wore as a rookie to his preferred No. 4 for his second season. When Green was drafted, forward Danuel House Jr. wore No. 4 with the Rockets. Though House was waived in December of Green’s rookie season, Green, like Smith, had to wait for the off-season to make the change.
Smith, the third player chosen in the 2022 NBA draft, averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds as a rookie, making 40.8 percent of his shots and 30.7 percent of his 3-pointers. Smith averaged 15.8 points on 47.2 percent shooting in his final 20 games, scoring in double figures in 19 of those games. He is the first player in NBA history to have his totals of points, rebounds, 3-pointers and blocked shots through the first 79 games of his career.
