Houston Rockets forward Kenyon Martin Jr. goes for a dunk as Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic and guard Patrick Beverley defend during the first half of an NBA basketball game Saturday, March 11, 2023, in Houston. The Rockets were better. They moved the ball better. They shot much better. Young players that had struggled through much of the season had shown signs of growing up.
They again could not finish what they started. As has so often been the case, in crunch time, the Rockets were crushed. With the Rockets up four with 5 1/2 minutes left, the Bulls rolled through a 13-0 run as the Rockets missed their next six shots with three turnovers. In ‘clutch situations,’ the Rockets typically stay in games. They have the third-best defensive rating in games with a margin of five points or fewer in the final five minutes. But in those stretches, they have been by far the NBA’s worst offensive team. Averaging 109.8 points per 100 possessions this season, the Rockets average just 90.8 per 100 possessions in the clutch.
