After starting 33 games last season, Garrison Mathews has been used in a reserve role...

Garrison Mathews, guarded by Damion Lee earlier in the season, is drawing more attention from defenses when he's on the court.SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The designation of a “clutch” player is typically reserved for one whose actions directly impact their team's winning games. The Rockets do not win often, but if awards were handed out even in defeat, the clutch player award in Wednesday’s loss to the Kings might have gone to fourth-year guard Garrison Mathews.

Wednesday represented the most minutes Mathews had played since Dec. 3, the most field goals he’d attempted all season and a season-high for 3-pointers. Against a Rockets team ranking among the league’s worst 3-point shooting squads, the Kings were focused primarily on protecting the paint. That left Mathews free to exploit space on the perimeter, particularly when playing alongside forward Jae’Sean Tate, who assisted two of Mathews’ baskets.

Last season, his first with the Rockets, Mathews started 33 of the 65 games he played and averaged 10 points on 7.1 shot attempts per game, shooting 39.9 percent overall and 36 percent on 3-pointers in 26.3 minutes per game. He played so well that the Rockets guaranteed his salary for the 2022-23 season.
