A severe rock salt shortage is gripping New York State, leaving contractors and local governments scrambling for supplies. The shortage, driven by an extended period of frigid weather, has led to long lines of trucks at salt suppliers and concerns about road safety. Governor Hochul's office is monitoring the situation and working with American Rock Salt to ensure adequate supplies for all authorized users.
A rock salt shortage is causing widespread concern across New York State , as contractors and local governments scramble to secure supplies amidst the ongoing winter season. This shortage has become a persistent issue, leaving many uncertainties in its wake. In Wayne County, over 150 trucks lined up Wednesday at Lakeside Quality Building Products in Ontario, anxiously waiting to purchase the dwindling rock salt supply.
'We’re in the salt business, and it’s been a little crazy the last few days,' said Seitz, a representative from Lakeside. 'As you can see here, we have a bunch of guys coming, no place to get salt, and apparently we are the only ones in town right now who have it, so, it's been a little nuts.' This historic demand stems from the prolonged period of frigid weather that has gripped the region. The consistently low temperatures necessitate road salting even for minimal snowfall, further exacerbating the shortage. Lakeside is diligently sourcing salt from various companies and locations, implementing a five-ton limit per truck to ensure a more equitable distribution. Victor Village Mayor Gary Hadden reported dwindling supplies from American Rock Salt, urging residents to exercise caution on the roads. 'We will be getting salt on Friday, probably not as much as we’d like, but enough to get us through for a while until we can get more,' Hadden said. 'The concern is we get through tomorrow (Thursday) safely with the prediction of the weather.' The shortage poses significant challenges for various businesses and establishments, such as apartment complexes, shopping malls, and other facilities. They require adequate salt to ensure the safety of their customers and staff, for pedestrian walkways, insurance purposes, and overall operational smoothness. These entities rely heavily on rock salt to maintain a functional environment. A spokesperson for American Rock Salt confirmed that local governments and municipalities are prioritized as customers.13WHAM has received reports indicating that the state ordered salt mines to halt shipments to contractors. Governor Kathy Hochul's office clarified that the state does not exert control or influence over road salt availability for private contractors. A spokesperson for Hochul emphasized that the administration has been actively engaged with American Rock Salt to address its supply issues and ensure it fulfills its contractual obligations to all authorized users covered by the state's centralized contract. The spokesperson highlighted that provisions exist within the state contract to address situations where the contractor fails to meet contractual terms, including the option to source from alternative suppliers and secure emergency supplies. Governor Hochul remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of all New Yorkers on our roads and highways, and the administration is actively monitoring this evolving situation. Local government leaders and the traveling public can be assured that sufficient rock salt supplies are available to maintain highway safety throughout the winter through the New York State Office of General Services' centralized contract
