Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp brought the Outlaw Music Festival to Blossom Music Center on Thursday night for hours of old school, no-frils songcraft and live music played by living musicians.

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio - Big-tent arena concerts have become audio and visual feasts and often aim to place concertgoers in front of what amounts to live-action videos with lasers, plumes of pyro and clouds of dry ice, mini-films, costume changes, cadres of dancers writhing and undulating, acrobatics and rampant lip-syncing -- all designed to keep the audiences eyes and ears overstuffed.

“Pink Houses” became another rousing singalong and he ended with his early hit, “Hurt So Good,” which he deleted from his setlists for many years and recently brought back to great effect. Mellencamp may be known as the “Little Bastard,” but as the cool walk and shimmy shake he gave us during “Hurt So Good” showed, the dude can still have a good time playing his old hits., offered even fewer frills and there is a workman-like quality to his set.

The nonagenarian’s voice and his longtime companion Trigger, the modified and extremely well-worn Martin acoustic guitar, were in pretty fine form. Nelson’s unique, jazz and Django Reinhardt influence guitar style got plenty of breathing room as he mixed originals including a peppy “Bloody Mary Morning,” and nice rendition of the ballad “Angels Flyin Too Close To The Ground,” where the Rienhardt influence was quite strong on his solo.
