He has been battling the disease for a long time.
Inductees Vivian Campbell, from left, Joe Elliott and Phil Collen, of Def Leppard, perform at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Barclays Center on Friday, March 29, 2019, in New York. Vivian Campbell is one tough dude, and if you don’t believe it all you have to do is read his medical history.
Campbell, the guitarist for Def Leppard, made headlines this week because he missed the band’s first show of 2025 which took place in Mexico because he was receiving cancer treatment. But that is nothing new, apparently.“I’m still dealing with the lymphoma,” Campbell reportedly told the Lymphoma Voices podcast in 2023. “It’s sort of like — it’s an American expression — Whac-a-Mole. You beat something back and then it pops up somewhere else.
Campbell told the podcast that for the bulk of his journey he has been able to treat the cancer with immunotherapy. “Starting in June of 2015, I started taking a drug called pembrolizumab,” he said. “I remember that at the time my doctors wanted me to do radiation and maybe a combination of radiation and chemo. And I just thought, ‘Well, let’s just try this immunotherapy thing. Lets see if this works’ So I managed to get on the trial. I’m happy to say that it worked well for me.”
The band will now have some time off for Campbell to rest up with its next scheduled show slated for May 15,If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
