Rochester, N.Y. The city's East End district is about to undergo major changes to boost security.
Rochester Mayor Malik Evans hosted a press conference Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, announcing new security measures in the East End district and talking about the city's recent decrease in overall shootings. It comes as overall shootings in Rochester are down, according to the city.
Evans credits much of the success to the gun violence state of emergency he issued in 2022. It changed how shootings are investigated, and led to more arrests and crackdowns on places known for violence. The city has shut down nine locations and entered violence abatement agreements with three locations linked to violent crime.
"We want people to have a good time in Rochester, but if you think you can come and carry a firearm in the open and interrupt the vast majority of Rochesterians that are going to have a good time over the weekend, you've got another thing coming," Evans said.
