Rochester, NY is set to receive $100 million in federal funding to complete the transformation of its Inner Loop, a major infrastructure project aimed at revitalizing downtown.
Sen. Chuck Schumer announced Tuesday the city will receive $100 million in federal funding to finish the work. The long-awaited project, which is slated to start in 2027, is considered a centerpiece of revitalizing downtown. The city completed its transformation project of the southeast portion of the Inner Loop in 2017, and is now looking to fill in the remaining north section of about a mile and a half.
'This will be one of the largest construction projects probably in recent history in the city, when it's all said and done,' Mayor Malik Evans said. 'Not to mention the actual project itself is going to be a major, major infrastructure project for the city, but the other thing is all the ancillary benefits that will come from it. The green space, the development, the reconnecting of the neighborhood.'“This funding means new safer streets, bike lines, green spaces, and good paying local construction jobs helping lay the foundation for Rochester’s future,' Schumer said in a statement. 'We are making Rochester a national model for the future of transportation policy and reconnecting communities. Rochester’s next chapter begins today.
