The Rochester City School District is holding public meetings to gather feedback on how to enforce a statewide ban on cell phones and other internet-enabled devices in classrooms.
The Rochester City School District is engaging in a public discourse regarding the implementation of a statewide bell-to-bell cell phone ban set to begin this fall. This district, serving 22,000 students, convened its inaugural public forum on Tuesday to deliberate on the policy, which aims to restrict the use of cell phones and other internet-enabled devices such as smartwatches and tablets within school premises.
Marisol Ramos-Lopez, RCSD's chief of communications and intergovernmental affairs, stated, 'We recognize the prevailing trend toward minimizing classroom distractions.' Ramos-Lopez emphasized that while numerous schools already possess policies concerning electronic devices, this new policy will encompass a broader spectrum of smart devices. A survey, garnering nearly 500 responses, sought public opinions on the restrictions, concerns related to the policy, and suggestions for managing students' cellular devices throughout the school day. 'We inquired about the significance of contacting students,' Ramos-Lopez continued. 'Parents are accustomed to reaching out to the administration, and each school will communicate directly with families to discuss their implementation strategies for this policy.'
