After a battle with cancer, the trailblazing co-founder of Spiritus Christi in Rochester, Father James Callan died on Friday, Dec.13 at the age of 77.

"We came from California to work at the church, and he had many young people around him that were also working with him," said Rammerman. "His vision was a very inclusive Church, where everybody is welcome. He also believed in great music and great preaching...If you're going to come to mass, you should really enjoy it when you're there. So there's a lot of joy in the services, laughter, good music, people being together, all that's okay in the Catholic Church.
Callan allowed women to preach at the altar and performed marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. He also offered communion to non-Catholics. Callan's removal made national headlines, and after some months, about 1100 congregants of Corpus Christi joined him and Rammerman as they co-founded a new church:"It was a very interesting time to be there," said Rammerman. "Every person had to make up their own mind. Were they going to stay in the traditional Catholic church that people had grown up in and loved?...
