Rochester, N.Y. — A man charged for a fatal hit-and-run on the city's west side pleaded not guilty Friday morning.

Police said Paolo Smith, 41, of Rochester, was backing up his Mercedes Benz in a parking lot on West Avenue between Gardiner Avenue and Grover Street around 11:50 p.m. Aug. 1, when he accelerated at a high rate of speed, striking and killing LaShawnda Leggett, 46, and also hitting two parked vehicles.Shawnna Brooks, Leggett's sister, said her sister was a security guard and loved to go out and sing — which is what they were doing at a bar when Leggett was hit.

"My sister was a mother of three kids, three grandkids, several nieces, nephews and godchildren, and he took her away from us," Brooks said. "She was a peer to the community."
