The annual SPIE Optifab conference kicked off Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. features 1,200 optics professionals — including manufacturers, engineers, scientists, academics, students, technicians and service providers — from across North America.
The event highlights Rochester's role on the latest optics technologies, which play a pivotal role in a variety of industries. Tom Brown, director of The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, noted local colleges have produced a wealth of talent in the optics industry. "Many of those companies, as we're a city of companies, grew out of students that graduated from our programs — from MCC, from RIT, from the University of Rochester," Brown said. "We're just so grateful that many of them chose to stay here to be a part of companies, to be part of the local economy, in some cases to go other places but also start equally important companies that come back here again and again for business.
The convention continues through Thursday at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
