Schwan presided over Roche's tie-up with Genentech and steered the company through patent expiries over a 15-year tenure. via WSJ
The orderly transition is typical for the more than 125-year-old company, whoseof the founding family. Mr. Schwan joined Roche as a trainee in 1993 and rose to lead the diagnostics division before his appointment to the top job. His successor Mr. Schinecker is also a longtime Roche employee.
In an unusual twist, Roche never fused the two companies’ early-stage research units—a move meant to assuage concerns that a merger would erode the culture of Genentech, a much younger company completely focused on biotech drugs. “That challenge to constantly innovate, rejuvenate the portfolio, was the challenge of my predecessor and it will be the challenge of my successor, and we’ll all be measured against that,” he said on a call with reporters Thursday morning.
