Rocco Becht, the active wins leader among starting quarterbacks, transfers to Penn State to play under Coach Matt Campbell, his former coach at Iowa State. Becht, known for his grit and competitive spirit, is expected to lead the Nittany Lions' offense after recovering from a shoulder injury.

had a massive choice to make when Matt Campbell took over in early December: Would Ethan Grunkemeyer or a transfer portal addition start at quarterback in 2026? After three years of starting under Campbell at Iowa State, Rocco Becht has transferred to answer that question for the Nittany Lions.

Becht was one of the hottest names in the portal but always seemed likely to wind up with a familiar staff in Happy Valley.“He’s what I believe Penn State football is. Integrity, character, class, excellence, grit. He embodies every one of those traits,”on track to return to a throwing program this spring following surgery on a torn labrum in his left shoulder, which he played through during the 2025 season. Campbell revealed Becht received shots on Tuesdays and Wednesdays last fall to make it through the week of practice. That’s an example of Becht’s “ultimate team” mindset, paired with extreme competitiveness that both Campbell and quarterbacks coach Jake Waters cited for their starter. Waters further joked that golfing with Becht and offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser is “terrible” because of the duo’s competitive drive. But that’s what makes them such a good match. “ is gonna do whatever it takes to win and talk trash, and same thing with Mouse,” Waters said. “But I think those two, they care so much, and they want to win so bad. They have no ego at all. Mouse doesn’t care what plays we run. He wants Rocco to feel confident in the plays and the offense. “They have one goal, and they want to win. They want to have fun. They want to do it the right way. Create real relationships.” Penn State offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser talks with the media at a press conference at Beaver Stadium on Feb. 4, 2026. Joe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.comBecht, a 6-1 and 210-pound redshirt senior, is the nation’s active leader in wins as a starting quarterback entering the 2026 season. He started 39 straight games with the Cyclones under Campbell and Co., racking up 9,274 career passing yards with 64 touchdowns to 27 interceptions. Mouser gives Becht plenty of flexibility to get to the right play in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage, Waters said, and they won’t call a play if Becht isn’t confident in it. Waters then specifically highlighted Becht’s biggest strength, something that should be music to the ears of Penn State fans longing for a more consistent and exciting passing game: “Rocco has an unbelievable knack at throwing the ball accurately down the field, and Coach Mouse really likes to do that, too,” Waters said.Though he’ll defer many practice reps to the rest of the depth chart, his familiarity allows him to teach Mouser’s scheme to those who are learning it for the first time. And when he’s back on the field, he’ll have a familiar core of former Iowa State players around him, including wide receivers Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen. “He can just hit the ground running and work on what he needs to get better, and then also help guys,” Waters said. “ essentially another coach.” Perhaps most importantly, Waters concluded that Becht is going to do “what you want your quarterback to do.” He’ll be a locker room leader and will “sell out for the team.” “It might not always be the prettiest, but you have a shot to win every single game with him. And I want the ball in his hands at the end of the game. He’s going to bring that every single day, elevating the people around him.Max Ralph is a sports reporter at PennLive, covering Penn State Athletics with a primary focus on Nittany Lion football.
