A groundbreaking race will pit bipedal robots against 12,000 human runners in Beijing in April.
A groundbreaking event is about to take place in Beijing in April: the first-ever long-distance running race between robots and humans. Organized by the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (E-Town) in the Daxing district, home to over 140 robot-related companies, this special race will see bipedal robots from around the world competing against 12,000 human runners over a 13-mile course.
To ensure a fair and competitive race, participating robots must resemble humans in appearance and possess a mechanical structure capable of bipedal walking or running. Wheels are strictly prohibited. Additional regulations stipulate that robots must be between 19.7 inches (50 centimeters) and 78.7 inches (2 meters) tall, with a minimum hip-to-toe extension distance of 17.7 inches (45 centimeters). Robots can be either remote-controlled or fully autonomous, and teams are allowed to replace batteries during the race if needed. Human competitors, meanwhile, will likely be under close observation to prevent any instances of sabotage against the robotic participants. This race builds on the growing interest in pitting humanoid robots against human athletes, particularly in China. Recent events like the Tiangong robot completing the last 100 meters of the Yizhuang Half Marathon and quadruped robots acting as pacemakers at the Hangzhou Marathon have fueled this excitement. With continued advancements in humanoid robot technology, April's long-distance running race promises to be a highly captivating event
