Deutsche Bahn and Munich S-Bahn deploy AI-powered robot dog Spot to deter graffiti vandalism on trains. The four-week pilot project aims to evaluate Spot's effectiveness in enhancing rail security and reducing costs associated with graffiti removal.

A robot dog named Spot, developed by Boston Dynamics, is being deployed by Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Munich S-Bahn to combat train vandalism. This four-week pilot project aims to assess the effectiveness of Spot in deterring spray-painting on trains parked overnight. Spot, equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), has been trained on 1,200 images to identify potential graffiti perpetrators.

During its patrols, the robot dog will monitor stationary trains and alert DB security personnel if a suspect is detected. Security teams can then access a live stream from Spot's cameras to confirm the situation and take appropriate action.Graffiti has been a persistent problem for the Munich S-Bahn, costing nearly a million euros in 2023 alone to remove. This issue not only impacts the aesthetic appeal of the trains but also disrupts rail operations due to the time required to clean graffiti-covered trains before they can be put back into service. The S-Bahn emphasizes that maintaining cleanliness is crucial for providing a positive passenger experience, and minimizing graffiti is essential to achieving this goal.By utilizing cutting-edge technology like Spot, DB and the S-Bahn hope to reduce vandalism costs, improve operational efficiency, and maintain the high standards of cleanliness they strive for. Beyond graffiti deterrence, Spot has already proven its versatility within DB operations. In September 2023, a trial phase at the Mainz-Bischofsheim maintenance facility saw Spot inspecting wheelset shafts and identifying potential issues like loose brake hoses and leaks. This demonstrates the robot dog's potential to contribute to various aspects of railway maintenance and security
