The company had previously announced its age estimation tool in July, developed by Persona. This tool requires users who wish to participate in private messaging to take a video selfie, which is then used to estimate their age. Roblox assures users that these video selfies are deleted immediately after the age verification process is complete. It is important to note that submitting a face scan is not mandatory for using the platform; this is only required for those who wish to engage in private chat functionality. Furthermore, Roblox maintains its existing policy against allowing users under 13 to chat with others outside of games unless they obtain explicit parental permission. This also differs from some other platforms by not encrypting private chat conversations, allowing for continuous monitoring and moderation. \Experts have raised some concerns regarding the reliability of facial age estimation technology, but Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer, has stated that the system is generally accurate within one or two years for individuals aged between five and 25. He acknowledged, however, that there might be instances where the estimation is inaccurate, and he provided solutions for those cases. Roblox is providing options for users to contest the age estimation, allowing for the submission of identification or parental consent to correct any discrepancies. After users have successfully completed the age verification process, they will be categorized into distinct age groups. These groups are: under nine, nine to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and over 21. Users will then have the ability to chat with others within their designated age range, or potentially with other similar age ranges, depending on the particular type of chat. Roblox has announced that the age checks will be rolled out gradually.
