A Baldwin County judge ruled to hold Michael Mullen without bond until trial under Aniah's Law, marking the first time the law has been enforced in a child abuse case in the county. Prosecutors allege that Mullen severely abused an 11-month-old child while in his care.

A Baldwin County judge has ruled to hold a Robertsdale man without bond until trial, pursuant to Aniah’s Law. It’s the first time in Baldwin County Aniah’s Law has been enforced in a child abuse case. Nineteen-year-old Michael Mullen made his first court appearance Thursday, January 2, 2025 since his initial bond hearing more than two weeks earlier. The proceeding served as both a preliminary hearing and Aniah’s Law hearing.

Prosecutors contend Mullen severely abused an 11-month-old child while she was left in his care.Investigator Michael Baggett with Robertsdale Police told the court the child’s mother came home to find her daughter in serious need of medical attention. She took her to Sacred Heart Hospital where Baggett said doctors found significant trauma to the child’s private area. During later questioning by Sheriff’s investigators, Mullen was asked if he sexually abused the child. Mullen’s alleged response was, “I did not do anything to that little girl. Even if I did do something, I don’t remember it.” “When confronted with the fact that there were injuries and he was the last person with the child, that’s when the defendant made those statements that well, if something happened, I don’t remember. I was unconscious,” said Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney, Sydnee Corello. Police said Mullen drank more than half a bottle of vodka and passed out while the child was in his care. When investigators arrived at the Robertsdale home to question him, they said he was asleep on the couch. A Child Abuse and Neglect officer with the Baldwin County Department of Human Resources described the injuries reported by hospital staff, telling the court the child could have died had she not gotten emergency surgery. “It’s the first case that I’ve personally encountered where a child had to go straight to emergency surgery so that’s pretty severe in terms of physical injury,” said Assistant DA, Kristi Hagoo
