A software engineer but really a musician and a writer.

Robert Pattinson has long been rumored to appear in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune sequel, and the actor has finally broken his silence. While promoting his new movie Die My Love in an interview with IndieWire, Pattinson was asked if he had filmed a villainous role for Dune: Part Three, and he confirmed that he had.

This marks the first official confirmation that the Batman star has joined Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, putting an end to months of online speculation. Fans had been eager to see who would take on the next big antagonist after Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two, and it now seems Pattinson is stepping into that spot. He is one of the most notable additions to the sequel’s cast, alongside Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke, who will be playing Paul and Chani’s twin children. In the same interview, Pattinson also shared what it was like working on the film, saying, “When I was doing Dune, it was so hot in the desert that I just couldn’t question anything. And it was so relaxing, like my brain actually wasn’t operating; I did not have a single functioning brain cell. And I was just listening to Denis: ‘Whatever you want!’” While nothing is officially confirmed about his character, Pattinson has long been rumored to play Scytale, the shape-shifting big bad from the book Dune Messiah, which Dune: Part Three is expected to adapt. With Pattinson confirming that he’s playing a villain, it’s very likely those rumors are true. In the novel, Scytale is a master of deception who plays mind games and manipulates Paul’s inner circle in his quest to control the empire. Actors Have Weathered Scorching Desert Heat for the ‘Dune’ Movies It seems that every Dune movie comes with its own collection of survival stories from the cast. The extreme desert heat has become almost as iconic as the sandworms themselves. Austin Butler once revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the Dune: Part Two set “felt like a microwave.” During its first week of filming, several people reportedly passed out from heatstroke because of the intense filming conditions. Butler also went on to say that the experience, while exhausting, ended up being a strange sort of bonding moment for the cast and crew. Zendaya has also shared her own experience of battling the heat during the production of Dune: Part Two in Jordan. She revealed that her costume was so heavy and complex that it took around 10 minutes just to take off. Because of that, she tried not to drink too much water to avoid needing bathroom breaks, which almost led to heatstroke. Villeneuve insists on filming on location to capture the real desert landscape, and that comes at a cost for the cast. Still, these harsh conditions definitely seem to pay off in the final product. Filming in real desert locations gives the Dune films a level of authenticity that’s hard to fake. The lighting, dust, and sense of scale that come from shooting on-site blend seamlessly with the visual effects and make the world of Arrakis feel tangible. Both Dune films have won Oscars for Best Visual Effects and were nominated for Best Cinematography, which shows how effective that approach is. When the camera captures real sunlight and sand textures, the VFX artists have a real-world base to work with, and it makes everything look more realistic. It’s the reason the movies stand out visually, even among the big-budget sci-fi films. And if Pattinson’s comments are any hint, Dune: Part Three will continue this tradition. Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two are both available to stream on HBO Max. Dune: Part Three is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
