On Saturday, Robert Luna was sworn in as L.A. County sheriff. He became the 34th person in the role, replacing his controversial predecessor, Alex Villanueva
over Villanueva, whose tenure marked a particularly chaotic time for a department long accustomed to tumult.as the agency’s undersheriff, marking the first time in the department’s history that a woman will hold the job. Tardy is also Black, which is particularly significant given the long history of racial bias in the Sheriff’s Department.
