Robert Kirkman, creator of the acclaimed comic series 'Invincible' and its Amazon Prime Video adaptation, argues that superhero fatigue is not a real phenomenon as long as stories are unique and fresh. He believes the familiarity with the genre allows for interesting and innovative storytelling directions. The upcoming third season of 'Invincible', starring Steven Yeun, will continue the story of Mark Grayson, a teenager who inherits his father's superpowers and strives to become Earth's protector.
is going the opposite way, arguing superhero fatigue is not a “real thing” as long as the stories are unique.
“I don’t think superhero fatigue is a real thing, but I do think that the genre of superhero storytelling has become so ubiquitous that it’s gotten to a point where it’s not fresh and it’s not new,” Kirkman told Variety. “You can’t just be a superhero show and not have anything special about you anymore because I think the novelty has worn off. But that’s really exciting to me, because now it means that everyone is so familiar with superheroes that you can push things in interesting directions.
Besides Yeun, Invincible’s voice cast includes Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons, Seth Rogen, Walton Goggins, Gillian Jacobs, Jason Mantzoukas, Zazie Beetz, Grey DeLisle, Zachary Quinto, Chris Diamantopoulos, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, Andrew Rannells, Kevin Michael Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Clancy Brown, Jay Pharoah, Mark Hamill, and Melise Jow.
