Exclusive: Robert Kirkman discusses the possibility of working on more classic Universal Monster movies after developing the horror comedy Renfield.
Robert Kirkman discusses the possibility of working on more Universal Monster movies in the future after Renfield. The Universal Monster movies are an untapped well of potential that can revitalize these iconic characters. Kirkman's approach to the Dracula story explores the vampire's tale from the perspective of his long-suffering henchman, opening up new possibilities that can be explored for the entire pantheon of monsters.
During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Renfield, Kirkman revealed that there have been conversations about him developing another Universal Monster movie. He explained that there aren't any details he can share publicly. However, Kirkman made it clear he would love to further explore this universe. Check out Kirkman's full quote below:
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Nothing that I could talk about publicly or anything. There's not anything 100% in the works, but with working with Universal and having the relationship with them that I do, it's something that's always constantly being talked about. It's something that I'd definitely love to do.
Which Universal Monster Could Kirkman Tackle After Renfield? Universal has a deep bench of monsters that could be perfect for Kirkman to bring his unique perspective to their stories, including The Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. Kirkman could either show these stories from different characters points of view, like Dracula's story being told through Renfield. He could also approach the story from the humanity of the monster instead of painting them as the villain.
If Kirkman were to bring more Universal Monsters back to the big screen, he could focus on each movie as a separate project or lay the groundwork for a shared universe. Renfield establishes that he has been serving Dracula for about a century, which could lend itself well to the pair crossing paths with other monsters. This could explore more long-living monsters in the present day, dig into legacy monsters, or retell the stories in a present-day setting.
