Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon sees his two regular leading men, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, playing irredeemable people.
While Robert De Niro has played some vile characters in Martin Scorsese movies, his villainous role in Killers of the Flower Moon pushes both the director and star to their limit. Since the beginning of their fruitful collaborative career, director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro have been committed to exploring the darker side of the human psyche.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In many cases, Scorsese and De Niro have gone out of their way to avoid glamorizing or romanticizing these characters. Raging Bull depicts Jake La Motta’s spousal abuse unsparingly, while De Niro’s intense body transformation for Cape Fear made the unhinged rapist Max Cady look almost inhuman.
Not only that, but Scorsese’s other famous leading man won’t get off any easier. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, Hale’s nephew who married an indigenous woman and helped organize the systemic murder of her family for monetary gain. While DiCaprio has played morally ambiguous roles in Scorsese movies previously , the intimate nature of Burkhart’s betrayal makes the character as unappealing as Hale.
