Barrister, television presenter and author Rob Rinder on his friend Rylan, his painful divorce – and where he got his posh accent
“I’ve seen much more sociopathy working in TV than I did visiting my clients in HMP Belmarsh,” says Rob Rinder. “Most of the criminals I’ve met end up inside because of poor choices, or because they’ve had no choices. But people in TV? Well…”, it follows trainee barrister Adam Green, who this time finds himself plunged neck-deep in media sociopathy when the UK’s favourite breakfast television presenter dies live on air in front of millions of her adoring viewers.
“Some of the best moments weren’t even on camera,” says Rinder. By way of example, he offers their visit to the Casa Buonarroti in Florence . “So, I walk in with my honorary DLitt from UCL and so eager to be liked,” chuckles Rinder. “But the sweet art historian couldn’t have given me more of her aggressively undivided indifference. Then in comes Rylan, who was smoking outside.
He also thinks we often “use the wrong barometer” to define what makes a good friendship. “People always talk about valuing the people they could call in the middle of the night. But I always say – you could call the emergency services then, too. And some people would pick up at that time to insert themselves into your drama for shits and giggles.
