Parents expected a hospital birth at the end of July — and a girl
GULF COAST, Miss. — A Gulfport couple welcomed their newborn on the shoulder of Interstate 10 after traffic prevented them from reaching the hospital in time.
Rielle Compton and Gabriel Absher were en route from their Gulfport home to Compton’s doctor in Pascagoula on July 16 when Compton went into labor. Their two other children were in the backseat.
“I was okay up until, like, 2 o’clock in the afternoon,” Compton said. “And then I had to call his dad at work and tell him that it was not a false alarm, that I was actually having contractions, and we needed to go to the hospital now. ” Traffic slowed the couple significantly before clearing near D’Iberville. Compton said her water broke in the car shortly after.
Baby born breeched across from The Grand movie theater Compton called 911 near the I-10 Woolmarket exit. Three pushes later, baby Rowynn Michael Lee Absher was born on the shoulder of eastbound I-10, across from The Grand movie theater in D’Iberville. The birth came with an additional surprise — after months of scans indicating the baby was a girl, Rowynn arrived as a boy, and breech, in the passenger seat.
Absher said the experience was traumatizing, particularly when the baby did not cry immediately after birth.
“And he wasn’t crying at first, which also traumatized her,” Absher said. “And I was scared, too. But winded up getting him to start crying and everything, get some fluid up. He winded up being able to start breathing on his own.
Very traumatizing. ”The July 16 drive marked the family’s first trip in a newly acquired vehicle. The family lost their previous car during flooding from Arthur in June after it took on water. Absher said he had picked up the new car just moments before Compton called to say she was in labor.
“She calls me. She’s like, hey, I don’t mean to alarm you, but I’m going into labor for real this time,” Absher said.
“I was like, oh, yay. She goes, I can try and hold out. And I was like, that’s not possible. You can just hold a baby in.
” Compton and baby Rowynn are doing well and are expected to be discharged Saturday. When asked about having more children, the parents said possibly one more — with significantly more planning.
