Riga, N.Y. — A road in western Monroe County is now dedicated to a fallen local hero.

Mercy Flight pilot James Sauer, 60, of Riga, was killed April 26, 2022 when his helicopter crashed in Elba during a training exercise.
The signs, which are posted on the road where Sauer lived, read “In Honor of James E. Sauer and his sacrifice for our community." "It's going to be tough to drive by and see it all the time," Sauer's son Joshua said. "But it's a great reminder of Dad and the love he had and shared." Sauer served in the Army National Guard for 40 years. He also served with the Rochester Police Department from 1993-2001 and later spent time with the Holley Police Department and New York State Police. He joined Mercy Flight in October 2020."These signs will stand as a reminder of James' courage, his dedication and his sacrifice," Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said. "It also serves as a reminder to a community who's always looking for heroes and role models.
