Traffic was stopped as fire crews dealt with the blaze in Oldham

Traffic was stopped on one of the major routes in Oldham during rush hour after a car caught fire. It happened on the A62 Manchester Road in Oldham at around 5pm this evening . A car caught ablaze on the stretch of the road near Werneth Park.

Fire crews were dispatched and police blocked off the northbound carriageway heading towards Oldham town centre near the junction with Oxford Street, Frederick Street and Edward Street as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus doused the flames. Pictures from the scene showed a dark-coloured car with its front end badly damaged. The Manchester Evening News understands no one was injured in the incident. The road was re-opened by around 6pm.A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 5pm on Tuesday, 21st March, firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on Manchester Road, in Oldham.

"One fire engine from Hollins station quickly attended the scene. The fire involved a car on a roadway. “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and worked to make the scene safe. Fire crews were in attendance for around 30 minutes.”Read more of today's top stories here
