Socso paid out more than RM37,000 in compensation last year under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme.
Its Johor director Tong Sing Chuang said in 2019, Socso handled 31,512 claims, with a total payment of RM1.5mil made to recipients and beneficiaries.
“Taxi and e-hailing drivers are the first to be included, but Socso has since widened our coverage to 19 other categories, ” he added. He pointed out that under the scheme, those who were covered included fishermen, farmers, agents, traders and those involved in online businesses. “Since 2017, about 7,667 self-employed people have registered for the scheme. We are working closely with Nirvana and other organisations as well as associations to get more people to register into the scheme, ” he added.
