KOTA KINABALU: Customs officials believe they have crippled a drug-smuggling ring here with the arrest of two men and the seizure of some 6kg of syabu (methamphetamine), worth over RM220,000.
This was after Customs personnel became suspicious of three consignments sent through the Aviation Post at Kota Kinabalu International Airport last Dec 30.
Sabah Customs assistant director-general Mohd Nasir Deraman said they suspected the parcels to contain illicit substances after going through their scanners. They then set up surveillance and two men turned up to claim one of the parcels at 12.35pm on Jan 3, he said. “After a check on the parcel, we found drugs believed to be methamphetamine weighing over 3kg, with a street market value of RM111,060,” he said yesterday, adding that two cars belonging to the men aged 28 and 30 were seized.
Mohd Nasir said they discovered the same suspected drugs in the two remaining unclaimed parcels, that contained over 3kg of methamphetamine valued at RM110,556.According to him, the syndicate would use delivery courier services to move their drugs, providing bogus information in the consignment notes such as fake addresses and non-existent companies to fool the authorities.Article type: free
