River Wild 2023 is only loosely based on the 1994 original movie of the same name, as proven by the twist ending of this dark survival thriller.

While the original movie followed a family who was taken hostage in the wilderness by a pair of criminals, 2023’s River Wild was the story of a doctor named Joey. Joey attended a hike with her estranged brother Gray to patch up their rocky relationship. However, Joey was horrified to discover that her brother’s old friend Trevor was also joining them on this trip, alongside tourists named Karissa and Van. Joey had a dark history with Trevor, although the nature of her connection to him was not revealed until River Wild’s ending. For most of the survival thriller’s runtime, Joey avoided time alone with Trevor. However, the rest of the hikers drank and partied on the first night, leading to a mysterious accident. Like Netflix’s survival thriller Keep Breathing, River Wild soon became a tense story about battling the wilderness and criminals as Joey realized that Trevor was responsible for Van’s accident. The group tried to get to a Ranger station so that Van could access medical help, but Trevor murdered the ranger and stole his gun. How Joey Saves Her Own Life After Trevor Stabs Her As Van’s health deteriorated, Trevor became more violent and unhinged. Van revealed that Trevor caused her accident when he attempted to force himself on her, and Trevor took the group hostage. Trevor killed a hiker who tried to help them while Van died from her injuries. Karissa escaped, but Trevor kept Gray and Joey as hostages while his connection to the siblings was finally revealed. Trevor assaulted Joey years earlier before taking the fall for Gray’s cocaine dealing, and he returned to settle the score with Gray and to attack Joey once more. Fortunately, Trevor instead got a satisfying horror movie death as the siblings finally worked together to take him down. Trevor shot Gray in the gut, but not before Gray and Joey could steal his raft. As Gray directed her, Joey navigated the rapids to escape Trevor. Trevor caught up to them, and the entire group ended up capsizing on a riverbank. There, Trevor pinned Joey to the ground, but Gray grabbed him and threw them both off a massive waterfall. Joey sacrificed his life to save his sister from death at Trevor’s hands, with the fall killing both men. Karissa then returned with a mountain rescue helicopter to save Joey, but not before Joey did emergency surgery on herself with a ballpoint pen and a hunting knife. Gray's Waterfall Sacrifice To Save Joey Explained Gray pushed Trevor off the waterfall to save his sister, but this was the least that he owed her. Unlike 2022’s true story survival thriller Beast, River Wild’s villains were all too human. There was the blatantly dangerous Trevor, who attacked Joey years before the story began, killed numerous people on the hiking trip, and also attempted to assault Van. However, there was also Gray, who facilitated all of Trevor’s dangerous behavior due to a debt that he owed him. Gray only invited Trevor on this trip because he was in debt to him for taking the rap on Gray’s cocaine dealing. Thus, the disastrous trip’s events were partially Gray’s fault. Why Trevor Wanted To Get To Canada In River Wild Trevor wanted to get to Canada because he was wanted for a variety of serious crimes in America. During River Wild’s excursion alone, he murdered a park ranger, murdered another civilian, assaulted Van , attempted to kill Joey, shot Gray, and stole a kayak. As such, viewers can reasonably assume that the villain had committed a lot of similarly egregious crimes throughout the time since he last saw Joey and Gray. As such, Trevor hoped he could evade capture and start a new life in another country by crossing the border. However, this plan didn’t stop him from prioritizing attacking Joey and Gray over escaping. Trevor & Gray's Dark Background Explained Trevor and Gray have been friends since their youth, and it was during their youth that Gray betrayed Joey’s trust to impress Trevor. Like Full Circle’s ending, the finale of River Wild reveals a connection between its main characters that re-contextualizes the preceding story. It turns out that Gray thought Joey had a crush on Trevor when she was only fifteen years old, leading Gray to engineer a situation where the pair were left alone together. When this happened, Trevor assaulted Joey. This incident traumatized Joey and left her hating her brother as he had failed to protect her. Meanwhile, Gray remained friends with Trevor. Gray never acknowledged that Trevor had done anything untoward, and he seemed shocked to discover that Joey was not interested in Trevor years later. However, Joey’s youth alone should have made Gray realize that his plan was inappropriate, and it is understandable that Joey never forgave her brother. Moreover, Trevor proved throughout River Wild that he was a lethally dangerous monster who saw nothing wrong with murdering numerous innocent people in cold blood. If Gray had listened to his sister years earlier, he could have avoided accruing a debt to Trevor that ended up killing both men and a lot of innocent bystanders. Was River Wild A Remake Of 1994's The River Wild? River Wild’s ending is not the only thing that the movie changes from its 1994 inspiration. While River Wild is inspired by 1994’s movie of the same name, it is not a direct remake of The River Wild. The only thing that the two movies share is a basic premise. While it is not a full-blown Kevin Bacon horror movie, The River Wild is elevated by a stellar villainous turn from the screen veteran. Its thin plot tells the tale of a couple and their young son who are imperiled by a chance encounter with criminals during a hiking trip. Unlike River Wild, the original movie doesn't reveal a complicated set of connections between its heroes and villains. There is no equivalent to the Gray character, who unknowingly aids the villain while defending his actions. This makes the original movie less morally complex than 2023’s River Wild. In River Wild, unlike the original movie, the heroine knows from the beginning who the villain of the story is. The problem, it takes until River Wild’s ending before Joey can act on her knowledge.
