The city of Marion aims to reverse its population decline with a new development project, River Rock Lofts, connecting downtown to the Mississinewa River and featuring apartments, restaurants, and a public plaza.

The city of Marion experienced a period of rapid growth in the early 20th century fueled by the discovery of natural gas. However, since the 1970s, Marion has faced a steady decline in population as manufacturing industries, the backbone of its economy, began to shut down. Now, city leaders are hoping a new development project, River Rock Lofts, will revitalize the city and attract new residents. Mayor Ronald Morrell Jr.

and other officials recently broke ground on the $10 million project, which will connect downtown Marion to the Mississinewa River. The development will feature apartments, restaurant space, and a public plaza, aiming to create a vibrant community hub. Morrell expressed the city's desire for positive change, stating, 'Marion deserves nice things. For so long, we thought that we were second and third-class citizens, but we deserve the best in this city.'Leading the project is Rebar Development, a company based in Fishers, Indiana. Notably, the company's founder and CEO, Shelby Bowen, is a native of Marion. Bowen shared his personal connection to the project, saying, 'I don't want to diminish what we've done in other places in the state, but to be able to do it here in Marion is something I wouldn't have dreamt of when I started doing this.' The River Rock Lofts project is seen as a symbol of hope for Marion's future. While the city's population has shrunk to about 28,000, a number comparable to its size during World War II, projects like this, along with the recently completed revitalization of the Marion National Bank tower, offer a glimmer of optimism for growth and revival
