For those looking for a little competition on the river, the Paddle Race Series provides a free opportunity to do just that.

Tune in for today's latest news stories on KXDF CBS News 13 at 5pm.FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Paddle Race Series began on June 18, adding to the many river races that will occur during the summer season. It also started off with record breaking participation.

This series involves three races, but only two remain, for the time being. “It usually consists of three races -- occasionally we will do a fourth kind of elite race for the ultra competitive of the bunch, but typically it’s just coming out and having a good time,” said Anna Burchfield, the advertising and events coordinator for Beaver Sports who is currently running the series.

For those that don’t have a boat of their own, they’re still welcome, as some equipment is provided. “We partner with UAF Outdoor Adventures and they are kind enough to loan us about six to eight canoes which they bring on location to the site and you just sign up with them and you can participate for free in one of their boats,” Burchfield said. While some life preservers are provided, racers are expected to bring their own safety equipment and wearing a life preserver is a must to participate.
