FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As the McDonald Fire presses on the Tanana River and other creeks, the impact of the fire may not be what you would expect. While the impacts of fires on land and air are clear, the impact in the water may be a bit murky.
For larger bodies of water the “biggest thing you’d notice is maybe some burnt trees or something like that,” Bartos explained. That dead plant matter may not even make it into the river during the course of a fire and if it did the consequence to the environment would be minimal.
