One thing that is particularly interesting about the Bangkok ferry project is the impressive speed with which it has gone from concept to live project.
LEAVE it to one of the Philippines' economic rivals to demonstrate how easy it actually is to achieve productive innovation: a fleet of 27 electric ferries will soon start plying Bangkok's Chao Phraya River over a 30-kilometer route, connecting Bangkok and nearby Nonthaburi province, thanks to a financing package managed by the Asian Development Bank .The project is called the E Smart Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit Electric Ferries Project and is a public-private partnership venture.
It is not exactly an unknown concept; there have been several attempts to operate a river ferry system over the past 30 years, with the latest version, launched in 2019, being the most successful so far.The current system, however, is inconsequential; at most, it carries about 2,000 passengers a day . The river ferry service has also been forced to take a backseat to other infrastructure development ideas, even if some of those are of questionable utility.
