A recent meta-analysis of 69 clinical trials found the risk for ischemic optic neuropathy from GLP-1 therapy is too low to be detected in patients with type 2 diabetes and/or obesity.
Patients treated with glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists appear to have a very low incidence of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy when appropriately prescribed for obesity or diabetes. A retrospective observational study recently suggested that semaglutide treatment may be associated with more than a fourfold increase in the risk for NAION, a rare condition potentially leading to blindness that is more frequent in people with obesity and diabetes.
The analysis included 144,226 and 132,922 patient-years in the GLP1-RA and control arms, respectively, and the trials used liraglutide , semaglutide , exenatide , dulaglutide , and lixisenatide .
