San Diego Early Music Society is bringing its audience favorite from Germany back with new collaborator De Bique for a Handel-rooted concert
When Trinidadian soprano Jeanine De Bique performs with Germany’s Concerto Köln, it’s truly a group effort.
It’s a perfect fit for a singer who revels in such strong female roles as Nitocris in Handel’s “Belshazzar.” Earlier this year in Vienna, De Bique played Nitocris, the queen who had to decide between her son and a vow to her country. “I give credit to my music teachers at home, who encouraged me to continue voice and piano lessons,” said De Bique, who later earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Manhattan School of Music. “They both studied in England and Germany, and said there were opportunities to be an artist where that’s your main job.”When she started her studies in New York, she had to choose between voice and piano because the school didn’t allow double majors.
Last August, her performance of Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” at the Summer Festival at Lincoln Center prompted a New York Times critic to write: “De Bique’s voice, rich and grounded, seemed to bloom from somewhere deep inside her, taking on a slender, shimmery quality as it extended toward the top of her range.”
