CLEVELAND, Ohio — Respiratory syncytial virus, also called RSV, came roaring into Greater Cleveland at the end of September and has been steadily growing, now filling area hospitals with sick children.in their emergency department, compared with a month ago. And MetroHealth has seen a 500% increase in the last month.

The vaccine could be available next winter., after gaining regulatory approval. However, the vaccine’s trial data has not been published or peer reviewed yet, news reports said. The virus causes 177,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths annually among those 65 and older.

MetroHealth System is experiencing a surge of children with RSV in its emergency and pediatric floors, up about 500% from last month. In October, MetroHealth admitted 17 RSV patients to its intensive care and regular inpatient pediatric department, compared to four this time last year.of RSV at its Akron and Youngstown medical centers, saidchief academic officer.

In 2020, RSV rates were very low, Forbes said. In the summer of 2021, Akron Children’s saw an unseasonal spike of RSV that tapered off by November.
