Rishi Sunak will now begin to form his Cabinet - latest
on Monday, without a vote of the party's membership, after being the only candidate to gain more than the required 100 required nominations from Tory MPs.Liz TrussMs Truss is expected to chair a meeting of her cabinet first thing on Tuesday morning. She is due to give a statement outside Downing Street at around 10:15am before traveling to Buckingham Palace where she will formally tender her resignation to His Majesty the King.
Shortly afterward Mr Sunak will then travel to the palace for an audience with the monarch where he will be asked to form a government in his name. Mr Sunak, who at 42 will become the country's youngest-ever Prime Minister and the first British Asian to hold the office, is then expected to speak outside Downing Street at around 11:35am.
In a short address at Tory Party HQ on Monday Mr Sunak said becoming party leader and Prime Minister was "the greatest privilege of my life." He thanked Liz Truss for her "dedicated public service" and warned of the "profound economic challenge" the country faced as he promised 'stability and unity.'
