But the breakthrough came only after weeks of a bitter stand-off, with hundreds of thousands of nurses, ambulance workers and other NHS staff leaving theirWhen he inherited the dispute from his predecessors, Mr Sunak insisted that the pay offer to NHS staff for 2022-23 would not be reopened for fear of fuelling inflation already running at double digits.
