Rishi Sunak's politeness was his most powerful move against Nicola Sturgeon ✒️ katyballs for ipaperviews

In Tory circles it is finance minister Forbes who is seen as one of the more serious threats. A Christian who is Oxbridge educated, MPs believe Forbes could prove a serious contender and even bring some Tory voters with her. She is socially conservative and is viewed as credible on the economy. Another Scot Tory cites Joanna Cherry, the MP for Edinburgh South West, as the “most effective” would-be opponent.

The general sense in government is that Sturgeon’s departure is good news for unionists everywhere. They hope that without Sturgeon keeping the SNP voter coalition together, it could fracture and in-fighting could take over. However, even if this happens, Tory strategists and MPs realise that in the long term Sturgeon’s departure could yet work against them.

The biggest political winner from this week’s events could be Keir Starmer. In Scottish Labour, party figures are buoyant – with Sturgeon gone, they have an opportunity to make inroads. Ultimately SNP voters are more likely to move to Labour than the Tories. Labour’s catastrophic election losses in Scotland in 2015 have long been seen as one of the major blockers to winning a majority in the future. For now though, most Tory MPs are just celebrating the fact that Sturgeon is gone.
