the idea of committing to leaving the ECHR in the next manifesto appeared to be “kite-flying” designed to tame the right of the party.
But they warned: “The Tory Party has done quite enough disruption in recent years, we’re Tories not disruptors. “One of the key jobs of this administration is to restore the UK’s reputation as a party that understands, supports and abides by longstanding agreements and international law.” The Prime Minister’s hardline stance on the ECHR comes after he received official estimates suggesting there could be an almost 50 per cent increase in the number of Channel small boat crossings this year, meaning 65,000 people could arrive by the route, according to theA Government source said: “Tackling illegal migration remains a top priority for the Prime Minister, and as he has set out, we are committed to stopping the arrival of small boats.
“Solving this problem will not be quick or easy, but it is the right thing to do – which is why we will stop the exploitation of our system and break the business model of people smugglers putting lives at risk for profit.”
