He described the club as 'incredibly special'
The Prime Minister has praised a Nottinghamshire community sports club once home to Mary Earps as "incredibly special" during a visit on the day the Lionesses secured a place in the World Cup final. Rishi Sunak spent around an hour at the home of the West Bridgford Colts on Regatta Way to discuss grassroots football and equal access to sport.
Rishi Sunak said the players he met during his visit were "energised" by England's win, with Mary Earps having joined the West Bridgford Colts at the age of 10 after it was launched by a friend's dad in 1990. The Prime Minister told local reporters during his visit: "It's an incredibly special club, what a great day for women's football.
"I love football so I'm biased, but a club like this which has that much reach and impact in the community is really special. Talking to the young girls here, it's super-inspiring, they're so energised, as I'm sure so many millions of others are about what the Lionesses are doing. I'm looking forward to Sunday [the World Cup final] with fingers crossed."
Speaking about the Prime Minister's visit, Mr Traquair said: "It's unusual, not something that happens everyday. He was very engaging with the girls and they were excited to see him. We beat Australia 3-1 today so that helps everyone's mood.
