Robot submarines perform tasks from underwater research to military operations against ships and other submarines.

Robotic submarines tend to be considerably smaller and don’t need to worry about keeping a human crew alive for extended periods at sea.Robotic submarines are ushering in a new era of underwater military tactics. These drones, technically called autonomous underwater vehicles , offer similar benefits to conventional submarines but can take things to the next level. are a subcategory of unmanned underwater vehicles .

However, when used for military purposes, these vehicles tend to be referred to as unmanned undersea vehicles . The first was developed in the late 1950s to study diffusion, acoustic transmission, and submarine tracking. Autonomous submarines can, like traditional submarines, stay at sea for extended periods. They never need to take a break, stock up on food, etc., meaning they can perform vital maritime tasks like long-term surveillance or missions in remote areas.

According to the latest reports, the Orca will be powered by a hybrid diesel/lithium-ion battery system. It will recharge the submerged battery with diesel generators while surfaced. It will likely have a maximum speed of 8 knots , while the typical service speed is about 3 knots . If true, this would give the Orca a range of up to 6,500 miles and an endurance of several months.. It is believed to be an in-development large displacement unmanned underwater vehicle .
