Police say six children are still on the roof of the Don Dale youth detention facility following a riot that started on Wednesday afternoon, which saw a police officer taken to hospital and a building set alight.

"There was a police officer injured by one of the youth who threw a projectile at the police officer," he said.Acting Deputy Commissioner Dole said police had been at Don Dale throughout the night and that eight detainees had "surrendered to police and been taken back into custody"."Negotiations are continuing to have those youths surrender to authorities at site."
